New York City's Shaarey Shamoyim Synagogue is better known as the First Roumanian-American Congregation.  The shul has been arguably the premier synagogue for chazzonis in America for generations.  Cantorial alumni included Richard Tucker and Jan Peerce.

The building started as a church in 1888 and was purchased by the congregation in 1890.
