The Israel Defense Forces has created a special e-mail address where the
public may express its condolences to the Ramon family and to the people of
the State of Israel on the loss of Col. Ilan Ramon in the Columbia Space
Shuttle tragedy. The address is: ilanfamily@mail.idf.il

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and U.S. President George Bush expressed their
condolences to each other via telephone. Sharon said "at times like these
the hearts of the American and Israeli peoples beat as one and we hold hands
together and pray." Bush conveyed his solidarity with the family of Israeli
Payload Specialist Colonel Ilan Ramon.

The State of Israel has lowered its flag to half staff.

The Columbia space shuttle carried a 7-person crew, including the first
Israeli astronaut, Colonel Ilan Ramon. The other crewmembers were mission
commander Colonel Rick Husband, pilot William McCool, mission specialists
Captain David Brown, Laurel Clark, Kalpana Chawla and payload commander
Lieutenant Colonel Mike Anderson.
The Columbia space shuttle broke into pieces upon re-entry at 200,000 feet,
soon after breaking the sound barrier.
