Rachel Marks

Teacher (1869-1954).  Graduate of Central High School in Buffalo.  Miss Marks, a  teacher in the Buffalo public schools, was appointed to teach in the Temple Beth Zion religious school in 1895.   Later, as principal of the Beth Zion school, she professionalized the school faculty with the institution of the policy of hiring paid, trained teachers.  The system of professional teaching in synagogue associated Hebrew schools continues in the Buffalo area to the present day.
