Wer zu Letzt Lacht, Lacht am Besten! (Whoever laughs last, laughs best)
The
above proverb befits the German/European Jews who escaped the fate of their
innocent brethren who died at the hands of the Nazis, the Germans, the Poles and
the other gentile murderers of the twentieth century. Reminisce and share with us a few of the poignant, the funny, and the not so humorous mostly German –Jewish sayings of yesterday's times, wisdom, advice, opinions and recollections: “Schuld am Elend, sagt er Schuld am Leid Sagt er Schuld wenn’s regent sagt er Schuld wenn’s schneit Sagt er Schuld an allem, sagt er voller Wut Sagt er Schuld alleine, sagt er ist der Jud!” (The cause for the misery, pain, when it rains or snows, the fault for every evil is the Jew) “Alle Glocken brummen Lo Mesummen, lo Mesummen” (Every bell angrily rings scanty money, scanty money.) “Es kratzt sich keiner um bechinnem Entweder hat er dayes oder kinnem” (No one scratches himelf for no reason, either he has worries or lice.) “Allen Leuten recht getan Ist eine Kunst, die Niemand kann!” (To do the right thing for all people is an art that no one can achieve) “Der Tohle ist am Scheidewege” (The devil or false deity is at the crossroads/farewell.) “Die sollen untergehen wie Korach" (They should die as Korach died.) “Ziggele, miggele Kotinke, reite Pomeranzen Wenn das Keppele sich schickert an Wollen die Fueselich tanzen”. (This is a yiddish poem: ride little one, when the head is drunk, the feet want to dance) “Salomon der Weise spricht Laute Pumpse stinken nicht Aber diese leisen, Die da um die Ecke schleichen Die Stinken am Meisten” (Solomon
