The Administration of Iraq

Commentary by Dr. Gerhard Falk

The Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs

has for many years invited retired American generals and admirals to visit Israel. Among the 43 other generals and admirals who traveled to Israel in 2000 was General Jay Garner, who has just been appointed administrator of Iraq. General Garner will initially administer those parts of Iraq which have now been liberated and will bring with him humanitarian aid to the Iraqi people.

While in Israel, General Garner, among others, signed a statement saying that he and the other signatories “were appalled by the Palestinian political and military leadership that teaches children the mechanics of war while filling their heads with hate” and praised “the remarkable restraint of the Israeli defense forces.”

The American military men, including General Garner, pointed to the benefits of the American –Israel security arrangements, not only for Israel but also for our country. They praised Israel for promoting “freedom, democracy and the rule of law” and they wrote that Israel “is the only country in the Middle East that shares our democratic and humanitarian values.” They then went on to say that “A strong Israel is an important security asset to the United States.”

Now any normal, rational person could easily agree to these facts which are as plain as the proposition that 2 plus 2 is four. However, the hate mongers and anti-Jewish crazies are “appalled” that the President has appointed General Garner. To the hate mongers Garner is “a friend of the Jews” and therefore disqualified from any office.

The British colonialists who ruled and dismembered Israel until 1948 are griping that General Garner has “links to Sharon.”

Garner will be governing Iraq from Baghdad. He will have three assistants who will divide Iraq into three zones to be governed by each of the assistants under the overall supervision of Garner and eventually Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Since Garner’s deputy will be General John Abuzaid, an Arab-American who speaks the Arab language, the hysteria concerning General Garner is ipso facto ridiculous. Of course the British are anxious to be part of the government of Iraq in order to offset the so-called “pro-Jewish bias” of General Garner.

The British press is complaining that Assistant secretary of defense Wolfowitz, a Jew, is in fact “behind” all of this and that Paul Wolfowitz somehow runs the whole U.S. government and dominates everyone, even President Bush.

An entire coalition of anti-Jewish hate mongers has organized to “stop Garner” by launching a web site called “Stop Garner”. These hate mongers want the so-called United Nations to supervise the reconstruction of Iraq. Since Syria is the chair of the U.N. Security Council it is obvious that such a move would reinstitute the same dictatorship in Iraq that is now in power in Syria and was in power in Iraq.

The same people who seek to discredit General Garner claim that “the Jews” conducted the war against Iraq for the benefit of Israel and not for the benefit of this country. Yet, there is not one Jew in the cabinet of President George W. Bush. The fact is that JINSA has the same right to influence American foreign policy as any other group, including the American – Arab Anti Discrimination Committee, run by Hussein Ibish, who commented: “People in the Arab world are completely amazed by the Iraq policy, they don’t get it, and the view that Israel is behind it all is one that is gaining strength.”

It is of course true that Iraq has threatened Israel for decades. Iraq launched 39 missiles at Israel during the Gulf War of 1991. The Iraqi dictator paid Arab settlers in Israel to conduct homicide bombings, killing children on school buses and dinner guests in restaurants. We suggest that an American ought to be favoring the democratic government in Israel instead of the blood soaked dictators in the Arab conglomerate. The Arab countries are, without exceptions, enemies of the U.S.A., even if they pretend otherwise. On whose side is the Arab-American Committee? The side of the terrorists who blew up the World Trade Center and the Pentagon?

The fact is that the appointment of General Garner has nothing to do with Israel. He was appointed because of his excellent record as an administrator in the former Yugoslavia and because of his long military experience. Likewise, President Bush appointed Elliott Abrams to the position of Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Near East Affairs of the National Security Council in charge of our Middle East policy. Abrams is Jewish and a major advocate of Israeli security. This too was opposed by the hate mongers.

Evidently we have a president who puts America first and pays no attention to the anti-American traitors among us. God bless George W. Bush.

Shalom u’vracha.
